Ready For Your Job Search To Take a Giant Step In the Right Direction?

It will, when you can put exactly the right words, in exactly the right place on your resume…every single time.

Dear Job Seeker –

Is this you: diligently searching the online job boards and company web sites, spending eye-blurring hours tracking down information and cranking out resumes…10 or 20 every week for months, but with nothing to show from all that work?

Maybe you tried a resume writer. Maybe you trust the outplacement counselor that said, “Your resume is fine.” Maybe you’ve stopped listing to resume advice at all because it all seems contradictory and ineffective.

Can I let you in on a little insider secret?

In 16 years as a recruiter I’ve seen somewhere north of 10,000 resumes while filling 730 jobs. And I can positively tell you that I blow off 80% of them within a few seconds. Yep, that’s the truth:  I don’t actually read the majority of them. I scan ‘em and delete ‘em as fast as I can go. I know – that probably either ticks you off, or confirms what you’ve suspected all along. But before you throw a shoe at me…

Want to know why it’s so easy to knock them out so fast?

The number one reason I don’t read most resumes as a recruiter:

Is simple – it’s not clear at a single glance that the resume actually fits the job.

If you think about it, that doesn’t make a lot of sense. After all, a resume is supposed to match the job it’s submitted for. Precisely! But you’d be shocked how often they don’t.

And I’m not the only one who feels this way – it’s the same for my recruiting and HR colleagues, and for most hiring managers I’ve worked for. I could point you to a dozen articles on LinkedIn, blogs or the advice sections of the big job boards that will tell you the same thing: most resumes don’t actually look like a clear fit.

Want to know the biggest kick in the pants?

I KNOW (from occasionally getting surprised when I call someone with an ‘iffy’ resume) that many of the people behind those resumes have the skills and experience to do the work I’m trying to find someone to do.

I once had an acquaintance in human resources (a person I knew from networking events) send me a resume for an HR job at a company where I recruiting who didn’t put ANY of her most relevant experience in the resume, but expected that she’d still get an interview…just because she was a senior HR person.

She had experience that would have made her a reasonable candidate for the job; she just didn’t put it in the resume!

One of my “paper mentors” in marketing is Perry Marshall, and he taught me a few years back:

“In marketing, it doesn’t matter how good you are…”

What matters is how well you COMMUNICATE how good you are. You can be the best programmer on the planet, but if you can’t tell people why they should care, you’ll be programming in your kitchen for free instead of getting paid for what you can do.

To be fair, it’s not all your fault – most people are trying to follow the “HR rules” and only send a few pages of information, usually written at a very high level, hoping to do something very difficult: match the right pieces of years of complex job history to a terribly written job ad.

If you’re like them, you’re hoping someone, somewhere will interpolate between the data points you’ve written and see how great you are…but you’re not getting calls for one simple reason:

You’re NOT speaking their most fundamental language!

Stop blabbing on about what you DO,and start telling them why they should CARE.

Practically every resume I get as a recruiter forces me to read between the lines – to take a high-level picture of what someone did on a job and figure out, “Will that help me in my the specific case I’m recruiting for?”

Does that surprise you?

  • Do you think most corporate or for-fee recruiters and HR people have the know-how to read between the lines in your field and figure out whether the tasks you did in past jobs will get the right results in the one they’re recruiting for?
  • Do you think they have time to read, absorb and interpret every word in your resume when they’ll get 200-500 resumes for every job (and are probably recruiting for 10 or more open positions at a time)?
  • Do you think they will carefully consider each candidate who sends in a resume, even after they have people in the interview process?
  • In your heart do you believe that “good companies” will actually invest the time to really probe into someone’s background before they discount them as a candidate?

Then forgive me for being blunt, but you’re living in a fantasy land. The truth is that most of the evidence you could be presenting is still in your head, not on paper. You’re stuck in a classic Catch-22:

If they brought you in for an interview, you’d do just fine…but they until you make it crystal clear on paper.

In fantasy land, you’re stuck with only one course of action – keep firing those resumes in there and hoping for a hit…kind of like blind archery.

Ready for reality?

If you’re not getting results, your resume, like many, may suffer from a common problem: it’s not explicit about the results you’ve produced and what it means for other potential employers.

That means your resume is like a dirty glass-block window…no one can see any details of your true shape, they’re just guessing what you look like based on confusing blobs of information inside a rough outline.

Instead of telling a reader what you can do, how you did it and offering them realistic proof, you’re forcing them to guess based on outlines and fuzzy logic.

Recruiters and hiring managers are NOT in the guessing business.

In fact, I’ve told recruiters I have trained and managed what I learned a long time ago – we’re not in the ‘possibility’ business, we’re in the ‘probability’ business.

When I See a Resume That’s Clearly a Match I Pick Up the Phone. When I Have to Guess, I Usually Pass – Period.

That follows another time-honored marketing principal – “Confused Buyers Don’t Buy!” If you want more interview calls, you must communicate your skills more clearly.

Tell the truth: how many resumes have you submitted for jobs you think you are perfect for, only to get nothing but maddening silence in return? How many times have you been called for a job that isn’t a match at all…because the recruiter was confused about what you do?

If you don’t clearly, rapidly state what you’ve accomplished and how it relates to the job at hand, you lose. Fast…if you’re not clearly communicating the manager or recruiter will toss your resume aside with no more thought than tossing empty peanut shells on the ground at a ball game.
